Oriol Texidor Martínez

Barcelona, September 30th, 1974

Architect by the Polytechnic University of Catalonia. He forms as an artist in a self-taught manner, through a four-year journey that takes him to visit and study the main European museums to get to know the History of Art, and to retire a time in the mountains, alone, where he will begin to paint. www.orioltexidor.com

His works are exhibited regularly, with more than a hundred exhibitions both individual and collective. He has recived several awards, such as the International Sculpture Competition Anchipurac esCultura in Argentina (2018), 1st Prize at the Grant-Prize Cal Massó of Contemporary Art (2008), 1st Prize at the Young Painting Biennial Contest of the Gouvernment of Catalunya (2004), 1st Prize at the International Painting Award of the Cercle de Belles Arts de Lleida (2003) ), 1st Prize in the Painting Competition Jaurena Art (2003), Prize to Young Painters at Sala Parés (2002), among others. He has been a resident artist invited by several national and international museums. His artworks are present in art collections in Spain (ES), Holland (NL), France (FR), Belgium (BE), Germany (DE), Morocco (MA), England (UK), Portugal (PT), Austria (AT) and Argentina (AR).

In 2007, he joined his architectural training with artistic practice, creating the studio ar+quitectura plàstica, specializing in artistic interventions in the architecture.

He has given workshops in sculpture, painting and drawing in various educational centers, and is an adviser of artistic projects for international students.

His testimony has been published in two books: ‘Spirituals without religion’ (Fragmenta, 2015), ‘The contemplative experience’ (Kairós, 2017).

Artist’s Statement

My line of conceptual interest lies in the introspective immersion of the human condition, in order to grow spiritually, while constantly I am asking myself about the artistic fact and the role of the arts in society as a whole. Personally, I understand Art as a quite useful development and awareness of the human soul and I fully believe in its ability to stimulate the concentration, the reflection and the meditation. My work focuses mainly on deepening into the contemplative experience, to contribute to the contact of the spiritual dimension of the human being.

My artistic career was born from a revelatory experience that assaulted me when I was 19 years old, when I knew the work of Antoni Tàpies, which caused me a feeling that marked me deeply. Once finishing the architectural studies I introduce myself to a journey through the history of painting visiting some of the larger museums in Europe, for 15 months. At the end of 2001 I came back from my trip and I settled in a very small village in the Pyrenees where I spent almost 2 years in solitary confinement, on which I assimilate all the information collected in museums, while it was growing my interest in certain Eastern philosophies and thoughts. It is during this “spiritual retreat” when I started painting, and in 2002 I made the first series of paintings that mark the beginning of my career.

“We are part of the whole. A limited cut of an infinite substance”

Texidor arrives at a maximum formal synthesis in his series ‘Immersions’ where self-referentiality is constant as indications of the introspective path to follow, and the cutting of the human figure confirms that we are part of a truly indivisible whole. In Texidor, the search for the essential in being is its greatest stylistic sign, which since its inception forms a path influenced by the East. Texidor has understood, like many artists in history, the spiritual in art, that invisible but fundamental, that indefinable but plausibly clear, defined, understandable not for our intellect but for our soul. Texidor is moved by a constant desire to manifest beauty through an essential, symbolic minimalism and extreme care for mater, often reduced in their primordial state, to look for the truths that are hidden beyond visible forms, those truths of mystical nature.
